I don’t why, but lately I’ve had a total Nirvana resurgence. It kind of came out of nowhere. I mean, I’ve always loved Nirvana, but it’s been a great while since I’ve listened to their cds over and over again. Lately I’ve just been in the mood and it made me remember all the reasons I used to love them. Also because of my internet obsession, I’ve been researching a lot about Kurt Cobain. He’s was always such a mystery to me, but after reading many of his quotes, it really showed what a complex, sensitive, funny, gifted person he was. It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years since his death. I remember the exact spot where I was when I heard about the news. I was in 8th grade on a packed bus with fellow students on our way to the airport for our 8th grade trip to Washington DC. I just remember everyone was talking about it and we were all shocked and sad. Kurt, hands down had the biggest impact on us kids at the time.
By the way, I know that my site is mainly a fashion site, but I believe music and people are such a huge inspiration for fashion. Kurt and the era that he came from will ALWAYS influence my take on fashion.
Kurt Quotes
Id rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not.
Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.
I never wanted to sing. I just wanted to play rhythm guitar – hide in the back and just play.
I’m not gay, but I wish I was just to piss off the homophobes.
The duty of youth is to challenge corruption.
We’re so trendy we can’t even escape ourselves.

Their first album debut was in 1990 with the hit single “Hold On”. They were the best selling girls group at the time and had a slew of other singles: “Release Me”, “You’re In Love”, “Impulsive”, and “The Dream is Still Alive.” I was about nine years old at the time and they were huge. I remember playing their tape like crazy.
Their songs are pretty much all harmonized singing. For those of you who maybe haven’t heard of them, their music is very catchy and happy. It always puts me in a good mood when I listen to them.
Wilson Phillips consists of Carnie and Wendy Wilson who’s father, Brian Wilson, was in the Beach Boys and Chynna Phillips who’s parents, John and Michelle Phillips, were in the popular 60s group, The Mamas and The Papas. All three of the girls grew up together in the 70s and 80s in Southern California. They formed Wilson Phillips when they were teenagers and were signed with SBK records in 1989. When the first single, “Hold On” came out, they were an over night sensation. “Hold On” was so popular that it knocked Madonna’s “Vogue” out of first place.
While their first album was a huge success, they later ones didn’t reach the heights of the original “Wilson Phillips”. The girls have since reunited to play some shows in 2008 they were very well received.
For me, I’ll always remember Wilson Phillips from that part of my childhood. They were great back then and I will continue to listen to them now.
I was lucky enough to score free tickets to Coachella on Saturday so I rounded up a couple of my friends and got there just in time to see M.I.A. I’m only familiar with a couple of her songs, but this show has totally made me a fan. Her music is so upbeat, yet definitely has some deep base beats giving it much more depth.
For me, I love when music and art is combined. M.I.A. was a visual artist before making it big in the music business. She definitely has a talent for bringing the two together. The show mixed tribal art, 80s neon colors and 60s graphics. She also incorporated some rad glow in the dark outfits which really made the performance stand out. Turns out my friend knows the designer, Janet Hansen, who’s company enlighted.com made the outfits, so cool!
The show started out with a group of hip hop dancers wearing the glow in the dark gear which looked totally awesome against the dark background. Behind the dancers was a very large screen showing a cartoon version of the dancers dancing in sync with the live ones. M.I.A. came out in a captains hat and glow in the dark t-shirt and jeans. The whole show was a visual feast for the eyes incorporating vibrant graphics moving to the beats of the songs. The last song she performed was her hit Paper Planes and the crowd went wild. Everyone was getting their groove on and having a great time. What more can you ask for from a performance?
For just having a baby two months ago, I thought M.I.A. did a great job of rallying up the crowd and gave an energetic performance. All in all, I was pretty impressed with the show and would definitely see her perform again.

I love exposing old music or bands that maybe aren’t so popular anymore or that the younger generations haven’t heard of. I just so happened to get the last of my stuff out of my parents’ garage (after 8 years) and came across so many cds that I had totally forgot about. I was so excited to find one of my favorites The Smithereens. The heyday of The Smithereens were in the 80s and early 90s and although they were never huge, their music sounds just as good now as it did back then; super catchy and fun, even their sad songs are catchy. I can totally picture John Cusack in High Fidelity being into them and apparently their music was a big inspiration to Kurt Cobain. Check em out…

I’ve pretty much grown up listening to rock from the 60s and 70s. My parents were hippies in the 70s who had an awesome record collection (still do) and Led Zeppelin was one of my Dad’s faves. Thanks to my boyfriend, now I have all their albums on my ipod and have been listening to them a lot lately. I remember hearing them throughout my childhood, although the songs that stuck out in my mind were more the hard rock ones like Immigrant Song and Whole Lotta Love. But I have to say, since their resurgence on my ipod, I love their less known acoustic stuff as much as any of their huge rock hits…
Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest rock bands of all time starting in the late 60s and disbanding in the early 80s after the death of the drummer John Bonham. Led Zeppelin consisted of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. I think I may have a lot of younger readers that may not be too familiar with them, in which I say, go buy their music right now! Such a great band and so, so many great songs.
My favorite out of their albums is Led Zeppelin III which has maybe my favorite of their songs, “Tangerine”. Such a beautiful acoustic song about love and loss. You might recognize it from the movie Almost Famous. The cd starts off with a bang with the “Immigrant Song” and flows into the song “Friends”, a rockin acoustic song. The album also has “Gallows Pole” a song that I remember hearing a lot growing up and also “That’s The Way”, another great acoustic song along the lines of “Tangerine”. Funny that this album was not one of their best sellers (although it still peaked at #1) due to the number of acoustic songs it had compared to the hard rock that made them famous. But I think it’s awesome! It makes me so happy I want to skip through fields of flowers!

I was driving up to my parents this past week which takes about three hours, so I have plenty of time to catch up on some tunes. I was in a dancing kind of mood so I put on “Janet” by Janet Jackson. Remember that cd? I was in 7th grade when it came out and believe me, it was all the rage at the time…
The first single was “That’s The Way Love Goes” which went straight to number 1 on the charts. I remember hearing it on the bus to school all the time. For those of you who are younger, this is probably my favorite Janet Jackson album. A lot of it is very chill like this song, but it also has some sick dance songs like “If” which probably my favorite. The video had insanely awesome choreography and Janet had a new sexy image that was very different from the old Janet.
This album had so many other singles like “Because of Love”, “Again”, “Any Time, Any Place” and “You Want This”. Seriously this album was played on the radio for a good year and half maybe two years. It totally reminds me of middle school when I hear it. I was so shy in middle school and remember listening to this cd wishing I could be as cool as Janet…well, my coolness didn’t emerge until years later, but I still love this cd.

If you haven’t heard MGMT’s Electric Feel now, you must listen now. I’ve been hearing it on the radio, at parties, at a wedding…it sounds different than anything out there right and it rocks.
MGMT started in Brooklyn and the duo consists of Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden who in college just got together to share their favorite music. Sharing their music led to them creating MGMT which Rolling Stone listed as one of the top ten newcomers of 2008. Electric Feel is on right now and Kids up next…Dig it?

I was introduced to The Mars Volta by my boyfriend who is a musician. He was so stoked to get their newest album last year (he has all the previous) and let me tell you, the first time hearing them, it’s a lot coming at you all at once. But they’re awesome. I think you really have to love music, especially loud rock music to really appreciate The Mars Volta.
The Mars Volta was named the best progressive rock band by Rolling Stone in 2008. I’m most familiar with their last album, The Bedlam in Goliath. They mix all sorts of different genres of music with rock including jazz fusion, latin, and funk. They started in 2001 in El Paso, TX and have released four albums; De-Loused in the Comatoriam (Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers played bass on this album), Frances the Mute, Amputechture, and The Bedlam in Goliath. You might also recognize them from their song L’Via L’Viaquez which is on Guitar Hero World Tour.

One of my favorite songs right now is American Boy by Estelle. American Boy was at the top of the UK charts back in March and is becoming very popular in the here in the U.S. Makes me wanna dance…check it out…
My new favorite artist is Imogen Heap and if you haven’t heard of her, you’re in for a treat. Imogen’s most popular songs Hide and Seek and Goodnight and Go here in the U.S. have been featured on the OC, So You Think You Can Dance, and The Last Kiss. Many of her other songs have been on the soundtracks for The Holiday (that adorable romantic comedy starring Cameron Diaz), the Chronicles of Narnia, Heroes and Garden State. But her whole album Speak for Yourself is amazing and I can’t stop listening to it.
Imogen Heap grew up in England and is classically trained in the cello, piano and clarinet. She also taught herself how to play the guitar, drums, and how to produce her own music. On Speak for Yourself she wrote all the music, played every instrument, produced, designed the album artwork and funded the entire process herself in one year. She also put out the album with her own record company, Megaphonic Records. Just goes to show you that if you want something bad enough you can make it happen. Very inspiring.
The album entered the top 10 in the UK just from her selling it online and in independent music stores. She became known in the US after Hide and Seek was featured on the OC and the rest is history. Speak for Yourself is not her only album. She was in the duo Fro Fro and her first solo album, i Megaphone and Blanket was released in 1998 and re released in 2006. I’m not familiar with those yet but I definitely look forward to checking them out. She also is working on a third album which should be out soon.
If you’re currently reading this post, you should be hearing Clear the Area, one of my favorite songs on Speak for Yourself. The whole album is awesome it was hard to pick a favorite song to play. If I could describe her music I would say it’s ethereal, magical, relaxing, fun and original. Check out more of her music on the itunes link below and her blog at http://www.imogenheap.co.uk/.
