“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.”

Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain

I don’t why, but lately I’ve had a total Nirvana resurgence. It kind of came out of nowhere. I mean, I’ve always loved Nirvana, but it’s been a great while since I’ve listened to their cds over and over again. Lately I’ve just been in the mood and it made me remember all the reasons I used to love them. Also because of my internet obsession, I’ve been researching a lot about Kurt Cobain. He’s was always such a mystery to me, but after reading many of his quotes, it really showed what a complex, sensitive, funny, gifted person he was. It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years since his death. I remember the exact spot where I was when I heard about the news. I was in 8th grade on a packed bus with fellow students on our way to the airport for our 8th grade trip to Washington DC. I just remember everyone was talking about it and we were all shocked and sad. Kurt, hands down had the biggest impact on us kids at the time.

By the way, I know that my site is mainly a fashion site, but I believe music and people are such a huge inspiration for fashion. Kurt and the era that he came from will ALWAYS influence my take on fashion.

Kurt Quotes
Id rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not.

Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.

I never wanted to sing. I just wanted to play rhythm guitar – hide in the back and just play.

I’m not gay, but I wish I was just to piss off the homophobes.

The duty of youth is to challenge corruption.

We’re so trendy we can’t even escape ourselves.

The September Issue

the september issue, anna wintour, vogue the september issue, grace coddington, vogue

I was lucky enough to be invited to the San Diego premiere of “The September Issue” by R.J. Cutler last night.  I have been anticipating this movie for a while now, and I can definitely say it lived up to my expectations.  All I really wanted was a behind the scenes look at what goes on at Vogue, but this movie is so much more than that.  You get to see the real side of some very high profile people: Anna Wintour of course, Sienna Miller, Mario Testino and Oscar De La Renta.  The real star of the movie to me, was someone I had never heard of.  Actually I’m embarassed to say that because she has played such a huge part in making Vogue known for it’s dreamy fantastical lay outs and fashion spreads.  Her name is Grace Coddington and not only is she the Creative Director of American Vogue, but she is really the high light of this movie.  She’s passionate, emotional, hilarious and very, very inspirational.  I can see a lot of myself in Grace.  She puts her heart and soul into what she does and although it doesn’t always go her way, Vogue would not be what it is today without her.

It’s also very interesting watching Anna.  She’s very reserved, but knows exactly what she’s doing.  It’s an interesting paradox that some so petite and fragile looking as Anna Wintour is the most powerful women in the fashion industry.   Just goes to show that you don’t need to be loud or dominating to be a powerhouse.  You need to completely believe in what you’re doing and you can definitely see that in Anna.

Probably the funniest thing about this documentary is that the Vogue offices are pretty much like every other office.  People talk behind others backs, feel that they’re not getting recognition for what they’re doing, gossip and make a lot of copies.  Vogue is a very glamorous magazine, but glamor cannot hide the realness and the hard work that is shown in this movie.  I highly recommend “The September Issue”.

“The September Issue” can be seen in New York, Los Angeles and other select cities nationwide September 11th.

Fuzzy Flashback “Wilson Phillips”

Remember Wilson Phillips? Their first album debut was in 1990 with the hit single “Hold On”. They were the best selling girls group at the time and had a slew of other singles: “Release Me”, “You’re In Love”, “Impulsive”, and “The Dream is Still Alive.” I was about nine years old at the time and they were huge. I remember playing their tape like crazy.

Their songs are pretty much all harmonized singing. For those of you who maybe haven’t heard of them, their music is very catchy and happy. It always puts me in a good mood when I listen to them.

Wilson Phillips consists of Carnie and Wendy Wilson who’s father, Brian Wilson, was in the Beach Boys and Chynna Phillips who’s parents, John and Michelle Phillips, were in the popular 60s group, The Mamas and The Papas. All three of the girls grew up together in the 70s and 80s in Southern California. They formed Wilson Phillips when they were teenagers and were signed with SBK records in 1989. When the first single, “Hold On” came out, they were an over night sensation. “Hold On” was so popular that it knocked Madonna’s “Vogue” out of first place.

While their first album was a huge success, they later ones didn’t reach the heights of the original “Wilson Phillips”. The girls have since reunited to play some shows in 2008 they were very well received.

For me, I’ll always remember Wilson Phillips from that part of my childhood. They were great back then and I will continue to listen to them now.

Wilson Phillips, wilson phillips, wilson philips, hold on wilson phillips, hold on for one more day, hold on lyrics, baby phillips

M.I.A. glows in the dark at Coachella

I was lucky enough to score free tickets to Coachella on Saturday so I rounded up a couple of my friends and got there just in time to see M.I.A.  I’m only familiar with a couple of her songs, but this show has totally made me a fan.  Her music is so upbeat, yet definitely has some deep base beats giving it much more depth.

For me, I love when music and art is combined.  M.I.A. was a visual artist before making it big in the music business.  She definitely has a talent for bringing the two together.  The show mixed tribal art, 80s neon colors and 60s graphics. She also incorporated some rad glow in the dark outfits which really made the performance stand out. Turns out my friend knows the designer, Janet Hansen, who’s company enlighted.com made the outfits, so cool!

M.I.A., m.i.a. glow in the dark at coachella, m.i.a. at coachella, glow in the dark clothesM.I.A.'s dancers, M.I.A., m.i.a. glow in the dark at coachella, m.i.a. at coachella, glow in the dark clothes

The show started out with a group of hip hop dancers wearing the glow in the dark gear which looked totally awesome against the dark background.  Behind the dancers was a very large screen showing a cartoon version of the dancers dancing in sync with the live ones.  M.I.A. came out in a captains hat and glow in the dark t-shirt and jeans.  The whole show was a visual feast for the eyes incorporating vibrant graphics moving to the beats of the songs.  The last song she performed was her hit Paper Planes and the crowd went wild.  Everyone was getting their groove on and having a great time.  What more can you ask for from a performance?

For just having a baby two months ago, I thought M.I.A. did a great job of rallying up the crowd and gave an energetic performance.  All in all, I was pretty impressed with the show and would definitely see her perform again.

Fuzzy Favorite “Smithereens”

I love exposing old music or bands that maybe aren’t so popular anymore or that the younger generations haven’t heard of. I just so happened to get the last of my stuff out of my parents’ garage (after 8 years) and came across so many cds that I had totally forgot about. I was so excited to find one of my favorites The Smithereens. The heyday of The Smithereens were in the 80s and early 90s and although they were never huge, their music sounds just as good now as it did back then; super catchy and fun, even their sad songs are catchy. I can totally picture John Cusack in High Fidelity being into them and apparently their music was a big inspiration to Kurt Cobain. Check em out…

Fuzzy Favorite Acoustic Led Zeppelin

I’ve pretty much grown up listening to rock from the 60s and 70s. My parents were hippies in the 70s who had an awesome record collection (still do) and Led Zeppelin was one of my Dad’s faves. Thanks to my boyfriend, now I have all their albums on my ipod and have been listening to them a lot lately. I remember hearing them throughout my childhood, although the songs that stuck out in my mind were more the hard rock ones like Immigrant Song and Whole Lotta Love. But I have to say, since their resurgence on my ipod, I love their less known acoustic stuff as much as any of their huge rock hits…

Led Zeppelin is one of the greatest rock bands of all time starting in the late 60s and disbanding in the early 80s after the death of the drummer John Bonham. Led Zeppelin consisted of Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. I think I may have a lot of younger readers that may not be too familiar with them, in which I say, go buy their music right now! Such a great band and so, so many great songs.

led zeppelin

My favorite out of their albums is Led Zeppelin III which has maybe my favorite of their songs, “Tangerine”. Such a beautiful acoustic song about love and loss. You might recognize it from the movie Almost Famous. The cd starts off with a bang with the “Immigrant Song” and flows into the song “Friends”, a rockin acoustic song. The album also has “Gallows Pole” a song that I remember hearing a lot growing up and also “That’s The Way”, another great acoustic song along the lines of “Tangerine”. Funny that this album was not one of their best sellers (although it still peaked at #1) due to the number of acoustic songs it had compared to the hard rock that made them famous. But I think it’s awesome! It makes me so happy I want to skip through fields of flowers!

Fuzzy Favorite Flashback “Clueless”

So since knee high stockings seem to be back, I thought I’d reminisce about the movie that started the trend (at least in my lifetime), Clueless. The movie came out when I was a freshman in high school and is still one that I can watch over and over again…

Okay, so when I first saw this movie, I had no sense of style whatsoever. None. I mean, I thought I did at the time, but now when I look back at old pics, man it was bad. And the girls in Clueless were so pretty and cool, you think that I would learn from them…nope. Anyway, aside from how fashionable Cher and all her friends were, this movie is hilarious. I’m probably just speaking the obvious truth (because I can’t imagine anyone has NOT seen the Clueless, shame on you if you haven’t), but come on, this is definitely one of the best high school movies ever.

This was before cell phones were mainstream. Remember that scene where all the girls are in the bathroom and one of their cells goes off and they all answer their phone? That was hilarious back in the day. Oh and remember Paul Rudd? Who knew that he would turn out to be one of the funniest guys ever? And how perfect was Alicia Silverstone as Cher? I can’t imagine anyone else doing that part.

I guess you could say that the Gossip Girls are this generation’s Clueless as they have very similar taste in style. Many of the trends from the movie have come back around in the last year or so such as plaids, baby doll dresses and of course knee highs.  Here’s some flash back photos…

By the way, this song is supposed to be funny, so don’t take what she says about not eating seriously!

Fuzzy Favorite Rewind “Janet”

I was driving up to my parents this past week which takes about three hours, so I have plenty of time to catch up on some tunes. I was in a dancing kind of mood so I put on “Janet” by Janet Jackson. Remember that cd? I was in 7th grade when it came out and believe me, it was all the rage at the time…

The first single was “That’s The Way Love Goes” which went straight to number 1 on the charts. I remember hearing it on the bus to school all the time. For those of you who are younger, this is probably my favorite Janet Jackson album. A lot of it is very chill like this song, but it also has some sick dance songs like “If” which probably my favorite. The video had insanely awesome choreography and Janet had a new sexy image that was very different from the old Janet.

This album had so many other singles like “Because of Love”, “Again”, “Any Time, Any Place” and “You Want This”. Seriously this album was played on the radio for a good year and half maybe two years. It totally reminds me of middle school when I hear it. I was so shy in middle school and remember listening to this cd wishing I could be as cool as Janet…well, my coolness didn’t emerge until years later, but I still love this cd.

Fuzzy Favorite “Dazed and Confused”

For some reason I’m in a 70s kind of mood. I’ve been listening to a lot of Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, and Doobie Brothers lately and I just can’t get enough. Anyhow, I might be a 70s gal at heart which would explain why my all time favorite is Dazed and Confused…

This movie came out when I was 13. I was kind of a movie buff back then. I used to get Entertainment magazine so I knew all the new movies coming out and I knew what the critics thought about each one. I got the issue that changed my life forever. Owen Gleiberman gave Dazed and Confused an A (you can read the real review right here). They had a picture of Wiley Wiggins with these big 70s head phones and I was totally curious. I was a pretty innocent 13 year old and here was this movie about high school kids partying, listening to music and smoking pot. It was a world that I really didn’t know too much about, other than the music. What I think I connected with the most was Wiley Wiggins character who was just entering high school which is what I would be doing the next year.

Anyhow, I literally can watch this movie over and over again, I never get tired of it. I love the outfits. So it came out in 1993, right, and I wanted to rock bell bottoms so bad like in the movie. Well, back then there weren’t so many style choices as are there are now and believe me, bell bottoms were not in. So needless to say, I never really fulfilled that fantasy. I loved the soundtrack! I got it on tape because all I had at that time was a Walkman tape player and I would listen to it all the time. And I loved the characters. Obviously I wasn’t a high school student in the 70s, but I would imagine that’s what it would be like. Everybody just seemed so cool and laid back. The bitchy girls were the queens of the school and the football players/stoners were the kings.

Dazed and confused was written and directed by Richard Linklater. Much like Almost Famous, Dazed and Confused was actually based on Linklater’s own high school experience in the 70s. The cast at the time was full of newcomers, some who have turned out to be some of our biggest stars like Matthew McConaughey and Ben Affleck. Everyone in this large ensemble cast was awesome. If you’re a fan of real acting, good classic rock and tight bell bottom jeans, watch this movie. My grade A+.

Fuzzy Favorite “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia One of the funniest shows on t.v. right now is It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. It’s crude, ridicules, but freakin’ hilarious…

The original show was actually written by 3 of the main cast members, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton and Rob McElhenney who made the pilot for under $200. The show was picked up by FX and Danny Devito joined the cast in the second season. All the characters are very selfish, devious, unethical and really that’s what makes the show so funny. To see characters so oblivious to reality makes for some good comedy.

Check out this behind the scenes (Warning) there is some pretty crude stuff on here, so you probably don’t want to play it at work or in front of kids, otherwise, enjoy ;)

No Reservations Preview “Chicago”

Chicago This week on No Reservations, Tony spends some time living it up in Chicago. I’m especially excited for this one because my parents grew up there. It’s a beautiful city with great food, so lets see what’s in store for Tony…

According to Ingrid at the Travel Channel:

“Tony loves the energy and edge of big cities. So how is it that he has
avoided Chicago for so long? In the upcoming episode of No Reservations,
he sets off on “some unfinished business” to rectify that situation.

When people think of Chicago they think of deep-dish pizza, hot dogs,
seafood from the Calumet River and Mancow Muller, Chicago’s own shock jock.
Tony decides to put all of them to the test and soak in even a bit more of
Chicago, such as meeting with avant-garde chef Homaro Cantu, and dinning at
the famous L20. He even makes an appearance at a backyard BBQ, for homemade
specialties like sausage, creamed corn and beans.

Tony concludes that although Chicago has been dubbed ‘the Second City’ –
Chicago holds it’s own as a great metropolis and in fact needs no
comparison. Make sure you watch on a full stomach, because the food looks
delicious!”

Catch the new episode Monday, February 2nd at 10pm EST on the Travel
Channel.

Here’s a preview of Monday’s episode.

No Reservations Preview “Azores”

Anthony Bourdain, No Reservations, Travel Channel So a couple weeks ago I wrote a post about the show No Reservations and how it is one of my favorites. Well, thanks to some inside connections, I am now able to bring you all a sneak peek to the show each week. This weeks show is in the Portuguese Islands of Azores and airs Monday January 26th at 10pm est on the Travel Channel. For those of you that have never seen No Reservations I have a video preview of this weeks show.

According to my friend Ingrid at the Travel Channel, here’s a little taste of Tony and Azores:

“Some of my favorite episodes of No Reservations aren’t always the well known locations, but places like The Azores, because of the food, the people, the culture and of course, Tony.

Having worked in kitchens alongside many generations of Azorean Portuguese immigrants, Tony decides it’s time to find out more about their motherland and explore the culture that molded so much of New England’s heritage. He hops from one island to the next while on the archipelago, dining on potatoes, pork, sausage, cabbage, shellfish, Portuguese soup and washing it all down with Gin and Tonics.

From the hot springs in Furnas on Sao Miguel to one of the most remote locations in the world on Sao Jorge, and onto the beautiful wine making region of Pico, Tony experiences the best of Azores.”

Thanks to Ingrid for the sneak peek and the video below. I’m excited about this weeks episode partly because I really don’t know anything about this place, but it sounds awesome. I’ve seen pretty much every episode of No Reservations so yes, I’m addicted. It’s like traveling without the jet lag and discovering places I wouldn’t otherwise know about. Check out the video and don’t forget to watch on Monday!

Fuzzy Favorite Almost Famous

Almost Famous I had a friend over last night to hang out and watch a movie. I came across Almost Famous on Demand and she said she had never seen it. “You’ve never seen Almost Famous?! It’s one of the best movies ever!” I exclaimed. So immediately dictated that that’s what we going to watch. This is probably one of my top five all time favorite movies…

Almost Famous stars Kate Hudson, Frances McDormand and a host of other amazing actors. This movie is soooo well cast. It’s definitely a large ensemble and each actor nailed their part. The movie was directed by Cameron Crowe who did Jerry Maguire and Say Anything. Almost Famous is a semi autobiographical story of Crowe’s own life as a teenage writer for Rolling Stone in the early 70s.

Starring Patrick Fugit as William (based on Crowe), a young, innocent writer who goes on tour with the fictional band Stillwater (based on a tour Cameron went on with The Allman Brothers) to write a piece about the band for Rolling Stone. Along the way, he meets Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) who is the leader of some groupies called the Band Aids. The Band Aids also join the tour, which turns out to be an eye opener for little William about the fantasy world of drugs, sex and rock & roll. While all this is happening, his poor mother (played perfectly by Frances McDormand) is at home worried to death about her son who’s been kidnapped by rock stars, calling him everyday to tell him not to do drugs.

What I love about this movie is pretty much everything. The writing is phenomenal, the actors truly bring these characters to life and it’s all set against some of the best music ever written. I grew up with my parents listening to Classic Rock my whole life, so I just love the soundtrack.

I really thought that pretty much everyone had seen this movie, but I just looked it up on Wikipedia and I guess it didn’t fare too well at the box office when it came out in 2000, but it was highly rated by critics, with Roger Ebert hailing it as the best movie of the year. So, if you haven’t seen it, take my advice, rent it. You’ll be happy you did.

No Reservations-Venice

One of my favorite shows is No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain.  Have you ever watched it?  It’s on the travel channel and basically Bourdain travels all over the world, tasting wonderful food, and meeting with the locals.  One more thing, Anthony is a total smart ass.  He’s a New York chef who’s hard to impress, but for every sarcastic comment is a soft spot for real homemade delicious food.  So for this week’s episode, he went to Venice, Italy.

Clarification, I absolutely love Italy.  I’ve been there twice, though not to Venice.  My great grand parents on my dad’s side are from Rome and Naples.  Italian food is probably my favorite, the language is beautiful, the architecture, the art, the history…it’s an amazing place.

Okay, moving on…I was really excited about the Venice show, especially since I’ve never been there.  Now I really really want to go.  The food looks amazing; lots of seafood, fresh garden grown veggies, homemade pasta and creamy risotto.  So imagine eating a delicious Venetian meal on an outside patio overlooking a canal.  What gets better than that?  To eat awesome food while staring at beautiful architecture…that’s why I love Italy.  You can find beauty in everything there and Italians absolutely live for that stuff.

Just a word of advice if you do ever plan on going there.  Anthony asked a local Venetian there who the worst tourists are.  He said, it’s not a particular nationality (which is good to hear for us Americans), it’s the kind of tourist who rushes to see everything.  You can’t rush things in Venice.  In fact you’ll find you can’t rush things in any part of Italy or actually any part of Southern Europe.  You have to take Venice for what it is and become part of the city.  Take your time, eat, walk around, eat some more, take a ride on a gondola, have some dessert…yes, it seems everything revolves around food in Italy.

Here are some Venetian recipes:

Inside Venice & Veneto

Shrimp asparagus recipe This recipe has been kindly sent to us by Ristorante Alla Corona in Dolo, near Venice.

The ‘locale’ is located towards the end of the Brenta Riviera and was opened in 1830 to offer a meeting place for Venetian nobles and countrymen from the Veneto hinterland.

Today, the specialities of the period are still prepared such as ’saor’ or fried sardines in vinegar, onions, grapes and pine nuts. If you go there make sure to say hello to owners Elena and Massimo.

ingredients

8 giant shrimps, 8 white asparagus from Bassano del Grappa, a coffee cup of balsamic vinegar, 8 lemon slices, chopped parlsey, salt and pepper.

making it

Remove the heads and shells from the shrimps, but keep the tails completely intact and the final two ‘rings’.

Make a cut the length of each shrimp tail.

Wash, peel and chop the asparagus crossways but keep the tips intact.

Dip the top and tail of each shrimp and aspargus tip into hot, salty water until they become crispy.

Fry the shrimps and chopped asparagus pieces in a pan. When cooked add the asparagus tips and turn the heat up.

Add the balsamic vinegar and reduce the sauce.

Serve by placing each shrimp on a lemon slice alternating with an asparagus tip.

Place the asparagus pieces in the centre of the plate along with the shrimp heads.

Sprinkle the lot with parsley.

Fuzzy Favorite “MGMT”

MGMT
If you haven’t heard MGMT’s Electric Feel now, you must listen now.  I’ve been hearing it on the radio, at parties, at a wedding…it sounds different than anything out there right and it rocks.

MGMT started in Brooklyn and the duo consists of Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden who in college just got together to share their favorite music.  Sharing their music led to them creating MGMT which Rolling Stone listed as one of the top ten newcomers of 2008.  Electric Feel is on right now and Kids up next…Dig it?

Fuzzy Favorites “The Mars Volta”

The Mars Volta
I was introduced to The Mars Volta by my boyfriend who is a musician. He was so stoked to get their newest album last year (he has all the previous) and let me tell you, the first time hearing them, it’s a lot coming at you all at once. But they’re awesome. I think you really have to love music, especially loud rock music to really appreciate The Mars Volta.

The Mars Volta was named the best progressive rock band by Rolling Stone in 2008. I’m most familiar with their last album, The Bedlam in Goliath. They mix all sorts of different genres of music with rock including jazz fusion, latin, and funk. They started in 2001 in El Paso, TX and have released four albums; De-Loused in the Comatoriam (Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers played bass on this album), Frances the Mute, Amputechture, and The Bedlam in Goliath. You might also recognize them from their song L’Via L’Viaquez which is on Guitar Hero World Tour.
