Red lips have kind of been a hit for 2009, but now is the perfect time to sport them. With the holidays coming up, nothing is more merry than ruby red lips, especially when you have someone cute to kiss under the mistletoe. Some of my favorite bloggers are here rocking the reds. I wish I knew what they are wearing as I am looking for the perfect shade. If anyone recommends one, let me know!
First photo is Rumi Neely of Fashion Toast. Love this pic. The headband looks sick with the red lips, very 20s.
Second is fromt the street style blog, Jak and Jil. I don’t know who the model is, but I love the red with the gray.
Third Photo is of Jennine Tamm of The Coveted. I absolutely love the shirt, glasses and red lips paired together.

I’ve never really been a fan of brightly colored lips, but this trend is growing on me. In a decade full of softs pinks and nude glosses, this is a much needed shake up to make beauty a little more fun. And you couldn’t ask for a more simple beauty trend. Besides the gorgeous red lips, keep everything else simple. Just mascara, light blush and you’re done. Be prepared to be the center of attention!

So many chemicals used in cosmetics today are linked with cancer and birth defects, that it could literally be dangerous to where certain makeup. Thankfully, there are many new companies devoted to creating safe cosmetic and skin care products. What I love about Josie’s line is that it’s luxurious but also safe and eco friendly…
You might recognize Josie as the face of Maybelline back in the day, but her bohemian upbringing often clashed with fashion industry she worked within. Eventually she was able to find a balance between the two by creating her own cosmetics line. There are actually 4 reasons that I’m promoting this brand:
1. Josie Maran Cosmetics is absolutely cruelty free meaning neither her products or any ingredients in her products are ever tested on animals. How great does it feel to wear makeup knowing no animals have been hurt in the process? Just this year Europe passed a law against animal testing for cosmetics which is great, but here in the US, it’s still legal and most companies actively test on animals. So this is one great reason to try her line.
2. Josie has signed with the Compact for Safe Cosmetics promising not to put any harmful chemicals in her products. This eliminates parabans, petrochemicals, carcinogens, mutagens and reproductive chemicals from any of her products. Most of her products are natural if not organic too.
3. I’m a sucker for packaging so it’s great when you get cute and eco friendly for the price of one. All of her packaging is biodegradable and her counter displays are made out of sustainable materials. Josie Maran Cosmetics tries to be as eco friendly as possible in their day to day business using recycled paper and eliminating unnecessary waste.
4. The make up rocks. I love it! It’s clean and great for every skin tone. Check out these new fingerpaints below you can put on your eyes, cheeks or lips…and I really love her tinted moisturizer and powder.

If you don’t already know, currently there are no regulations here in the U.S. on what ingredients are used in cosmetics. It’s becoming common knowledge that there are many toxic chemicals in products sold by some of the leading cosmetic companies. These toxic ingredients have been shown to lead to cancer and birth defects. The good news is there are more and more companies focusing on non toxic cosmetics. Here’s a guide to the best non toxic mascaras out there.
According to the site Skin Deep, Almay One Coat Triple Affect Mascara is the safest mascara out of the hundreds ranked on their site. Skin Deep is a great site where you can type almost any brand and see how each of their products rank on being safe. The scale is 0-10, 0 being the safest and 10 being the highest risk.
This Almay mascara was rated a 1 being a very low risk. I’ve done a lot of research on which cosmetics are safe and most major cosmetic companies tend to use high risk ingredients and do animal testing. Almay does neither which I think is awesome.
Lavera is an all natural cosmetic line sold in most major drugstores. All of their products are free of parabens, synthetic preservatives, synthetic frangrances, emulsifiers and petrolium products. Their products are preserved with essential oils and plant extracts and last up to 3 years. Check out their website.
Josie Maran is another dependable safe cosmetics line. A couple weeks ago I did a post on Josie Maran where you can find more information on her other products. Josie Maran’s black mascara is paraben and frangrance free. It contains organic jojoba oil, argan oil and beeswax to strengthen and elongate lashes. Her mascara also won Allure’s Editor’s Choice award. I love her products and highly recommend them.
Jane Iredale’s mascara was rated a 2 on the Skin Deep site and is considered very low risk. Jane Iredale cosmetics was one of the first all mineral cosmetic companies.
To be honest, for some reason, it’s very hard to find a safe mascara. Most contain parabens and other chemicals. Many all natural cosmetics companies don’t even have mascara, so I’m assuming it must be difficult or expensive to produce. I use Almay because it’s by far the cheapest one. I would love to try the others, but they’re around $22 a pop which I can’t fit in my budget right now. If you know of any other safe mascaras out there, please let me know!
