Josie Maran’s New Spring Look

Josie Maran’s New Spring Look

When I first started this blog last fall, I did a post on Josie Maran’s organic and chemical free makeup line. So many chemicals used in cosmetics today are linked with cancer and birth defects, that it could literally be dangerous to where certain makeup. Thankfully, there are many new companies devoted to creating safe cosmetic and skin care products. What I love about Josie’s line is that it’s luxurious but also safe and eco friendly…

You might recognize Josie as the face of Maybelline back in the day, but her bohemian upbringing often clashed with fashion industry she worked within. Eventually she was able to find a balance between the two by creating her own cosmetics line. There are actually 4 reasons that I’m promoting this brand:

1. Josie Maran Cosmetics is absolutely cruelty free meaning neither her products or any ingredients in her products are ever tested on animals. How great does it feel to wear makeup knowing no animals have been hurt in the process? Just this year Europe passed a law against animal testing for cosmetics which is great, but here in the US, it’s still legal and most companies actively test on animals. So this is one great reason to try her line.

2. Josie has signed with the Compact for Safe Cosmetics promising not to put any harmful chemicals in her products. This eliminates parabans, petrochemicals, carcinogens, mutagens and reproductive chemicals from any of her products. Most of her products are natural if not organic too.

3. I’m a sucker for packaging so it’s great when you get cute and eco friendly for the price of one. All of her packaging is biodegradable and her counter displays are made out of sustainable materials. Josie Maran Cosmetics tries to be as eco friendly as possible in their day to day business using recycled paper and eliminating unnecessary waste.

4. The make up rocks. I love it! It’s clean and great for every skin tone. Check out these new fingerpaints below you can put on your eyes, cheeks or lips…and I really love her tinted moisturizer and powder.

Josie Maran is a beautiful woman and I applaud her desire to be the “green Martha Stewart” and start an eco-empire – I really do. I just cannot get past the fact that her line absolutely includes petrochemicals and carcinogenic ingredients. Most people don’t know it because they don’t look at her ingredients:

Sure, she uses some natural and organic ingredients but I was shocked to find FD&C & Lake colors in most of her cosmetics, which are neurotoxins, PTFE which is teflon – seriously!?! TEFLON, a known carcinogen and BHT (cancer suspect) and more. :(

I too, love the packaging….think its hip, chic + high end – I just wish she would use her celebrity status to rise above the greenwashing and produce products that really are without toxic nasties.

I was not aware of those ingredients and I will definitely look into it. It really makes me sad if that is the case. I try to inform people of safe cosmetics so this is good to know. Do you know exactly which products contain those ingredients? Thanks for the comment.

    Hi Kate,

It’s definitely understandable. Not many do know what’s in the products. Its much easier to list the products that don’t have toxic/suspect ingredients instead of ones that do, because the majority do:

    These look okay…

    -Argan Oil
    -Lip Liner
    -Bear Naked Wipes

Check ANY of the other products and you will find ingredients mentioned above as well as PVP and barium (ones that should be avoided – ones that are on pretty much every “Ingredients To Avoid In Skin care” list.

Ingredient lists for all products here: http://www.josiemarancosmetics.com/packaging.html

I’m with you….BIG bummer as I had high hopes for this line! :(

I am a nurse, and have been aware of cancer causing chemicals in cosmetics for years. I am slowly but surely trying to find replacements for my favorites. I first came across Josie’s line a little over a year ago, and I have finally decided to do some research on her ingredients. I am appalled to find some of her ingredients are cancer-causing and toxic as well. Not to mention some countries have banned certain ingredients. Not only have I been disappointed by the Carol’s Daughter line (she sold out, and is now using chemicals), I can add Josie Maran’s line to the list of other so-called green cosmetic lines to avoid.

Here is a link if anyone is curious. It lists the dangers of Phenoxyethanol, which Josie uses in most of her products.

This is the first time I’ve gotten negative feedback about I certain line of products that I thought were chemical free. I actually do use this line, so to find out this information is kind of a bummer. I considered taking down the post because I don’t want to promote a line that I said is chemical free, but really isn’t. Anyhow, I decided the best thing to do is leave it up to give you the readers all sides of the story so you can do your own research and come to your own conclusion. Also, if anyone one knows of any cosmetic lines that really are all natural, let me know! At this point I don’t know if there are any out there :-(

I am researching a lot of this stuff as I have been a soap-maker for a long time and am considering a mineral cosmetic and body care line. If you hunt around, you will find that with very few exceptions, any product that will be touched by hands or come in contact with water in any way needs to have a preservative to prevent the growth of bacteria. For those of you with concerns about chemicals, your only option, really, for these products is to make them yourself in very small batches, keep them in the fridge, and replace them frequently. So-called natural preservatives are often just anti-oxidants, which will slow rancidity, but do nothing to kill bacteria. I think you will find though that most manufacturers, even small ones, are not interesting in making products they can’t make in bulk because they have literally no shelf-life. So, good luck with the search for “all natural” cosmetics.

  8. Kate Bello says:

Yes, unfortunately, that seems to be the case. Thanks for your comment.

I have been using JM cosmetics and was not happy to find out some of them contain-carmine-which is ground up parts from a cochineal beetle! Just had to put in my 2 cents.
